True or False: You've Had Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
True. My father had knocked some of my teeth out (he used to hit me a lot). Then I had an accident that shattered more of my teeth. In my late teens, I was advised to get dentures to lessen the horrible dental pain and cosmetic damage, and I did. When that happened, all of my wisdom teeth were removed, too. I had many extractions that day, and it was terribly painful. But the removal of the wisdom teeth paled in comparison to the extraction of the fragments of my front teeth, which was agonizing.

Reply:False, but I need too. I had braces for several years and the told me they would probably not come in because I was missing a few teeth and they had to break the roof of my mouth to get them all to move forwards and come together.

I was out for like 40 minutes...spend the next 2 days in discomfort...then was pretty much fine. Had the stitches removed the week later.
Reply:True: And I was only 15 when I got them out. I had to though or else the three years of braces would have been a waste. Anyway, I spent a week in bed only eating yogurts and icecream. I was on heavy medication so I don't remember being too much in pain.

Reply:I had mine taken out when I was 16. It wasn't bad because I was asleep for the procedure.
Reply:I've had 1 removed just last Thursday....i went to get a tooth pulled that was really bothering me and they told me they had to go ahead and pull my wisdom tooth too. they gave me shots and the gas and the procedure itself wasn't bad but the healing process has been hell!!!! they had to give me 6 stitches and i get them taken out tomorrow...yay!!

The anestetetic messes you up big time. The teeth hurt like hell and I coldn't open my mouth more than half an inch for three days. I lost five pounds and I'm already very skinny (Though I gained it back now). I also threw up one time the second day because of the anestetic

The crown I had two years ago recently cracked and fell out - should I get a new one or get a false tooth?

Two years ago I broke a tooth and had a crown put over what was left. It inexplicably broke in half and fell out leaving me with a gaping hole. Should I have a new crown installed or have a false tooth put in or get a bridge?

It is almost always preferable to keep the teeth you have and build on them, because when you start taking them out and using bridges or implants it isn't as easy to keep clean and your mouth will suffer in the long run. However...





Ask your dentist for advice! I know you probably think s/he's just trying to sell you something but in all honesty s/he'll probably advise you on the best treatment based on how your specific tooth looks, and will be able to advise you based on the amount of money you can spend vs. how long-lasting of a treatment you'd prefer.





And do it soon! The longer you wait, as other posters have mentioned, the worse your tooth will become and far less salvageable.





And finally... don't tolerate dental pain during treatment. If there is one thing I've learned in school it is that we have the medications nowadays to treat people completely pain free. If you are avoiding the dentist because of fears of pain it is time to find a new dentist, because there are definitely dentists out there today that can and will treat you pain free.

The longer you wait, the worse it will get... we're talking root canal and a crown... costing probably $2,000 or more combined.
Reply:I would go the route of an implant-it lasts forever and is stronger than a crown or bridge.

How much does getting a false tooth hurt?

When I get my braces off, I have to get a false tooth drilled in to replace the permanent one they pulled out; it was apparently getting in the way of another one that was growing in the same place. So... what I'm wondering is, how much will the surgery hurt? Do they give you anesthetics before or knock you out? How much will my mouth hurt afterwards, and for how long?

How much does getting a false tooth hurt?
This doesn't make sense... are you getting a bridge or an implant? You may be too young for an implant...and a bridge for that matter.... can you be more specific?

Reply:It sounds to me that they are scheduling you for an implant. An implant is where they fix a drill like screw to your jaw permanently then they have a tooth that matches your other teeth (they will take a mold of your teeth in order to get the size just right weeks before your surgery)that has a hole in it to affix it to the screw. This surgery is done under anaesthesia..so you will be asleep during the surgery and will wake up like you were dreaming. You will be sore and tender for a couple of weeks but should be back to normal in no time. Implant teeth are refereed to the "rolls royce" of false teeth because they look real,feel great, last a long time, and are easy to care for once you get use to it. They are just on the expensive side (another reason for the name). Good luck dear!

Reply:No, dentures are made of non-toxic materials that don't react with your saliva and are not harmful.


Don't be embarrassed or worried about going to the dentist about this - It happens more than you think!

Why do Americans wear grossly false looking caps on their teeth?

You have made a stereo type about people. Many people have cosmetic dentistry yes that is true, however some people have to have crowns to save a tooth. If I had the choice of crown or extraction, I off course will pick a crown. Think about your question. You are portraying the very thing that you are accusing "Americans with grossly false looking caps" of doing. You are suggesting that just because an American has great looking teeth than we think everything is okay. How can you make such a narrow minded assumption, based on a person's nationality and the look of their smile. If you really believe this than you are the one who needs help, not anyone else. You are being ignorant to the fullest extent, and if you honestly go through life making these kinds of generalizations, than you will have a very unhappy life.

Reply:Well it's not always about the look aspect. Not only from diffrent countrys but in America as well some people don't relize that denstiry is also a health thing. The caps that I belive that you may be talking about are called crowns. Most of the time befor a person gets a crown they get something called a root canal, which is when the root of the tooth is taken out to prevent pain that was probaply caused by to much decay. When the root of the tooth is taken out most of the tooth is gone as well and and only the outter shell of the tooth is there and is not strong enough to stand alone, which is wher the crown comes into place, that way a person can eat as noramal with out pain or further decay.
Reply:It could be that some have chipped, stained, crooked, rotten teeth and want to improve them. If they boost their confidence then more power to them. Whatever floats your boat. =)
