Do extracted teeth need to be replaced?

I had to have a severely decayed tooth extracted earlier today. Obviously, it's early to be thinking about this, but will it have to be replaced with some kind of false tooth? Or can I just leave the gap there? It was a bottom molar, 2 in front of the wisdom tooth. If it's not replaced, will my other teeth move to fill in the gap?

Do extracted teeth need to be replaced?
NO!

Teeth are like air conditioners in cars.

You can live without em! But it's uncomfortable
Reply:It is a possibility that they will move but mine haven't moved much and I am missing all of my wisdom teeth.
Reply:Your dentist or oral surgeon should have gone over this with you...but yes, you need to have some sort of partial plate there because there won't be anything to hold the tooth that is directly above it up in the gums. Part of the reason your teeth stay where they do is because of the constant biting action from other teeth. If you have nothing that he top tooth can press against on the bottom, it will eventually come out of the gums. I suggest you call your dentist back and discuss your options.
Reply:Your other teeth will shift to fill or nearly fill the gaps. Unless it's a front tooth or a tooth that showed when you smile don't worry about it
Reply:No, you don't need to replace them. There will be some slight adjusting in your mouth to compensate but nothing major. In my opinion, as long as the gap really isn't noticeable... you're good to go.
Reply:You definetely do need to have the tooth replaced unless it is a wisdom tooth. You will need an implant or a bridge. If you do not fill the gap the tooth above it will have nothing to press against and the upper tooth will eventually pull away from the bone and then you'll lost that tooth. Be prepared though an implant is expensive but I'd rather do it than lose my teeth. Also the teeth surrounding it will not fill the gap.
